How the YardMath calculator works

Volume is area times depth. We convert your depth from inches to feet, multiply by the square footage, then divide by 27 to get cubic yards, the unit landscape yards sell in bulk. Bag counts round up so you never come up short.

How deep should it be?

Mulch is usually spread 2 to 3 inches deep in beds. Gravel paths and patios often use 2 to 4 inches, with driveways deeper. New garden beds and lawn prep commonly use 4 to 6 inches of topsoil. Paver bases and play areas often call for 1 to 2 inches of sand under pavers, more for sandboxes.

Tonnage is an estimate, since weight varies with moisture and stone size. Always confirm with your supplier before ordering a large load.
